Program Overview

FAME is now offering a middle school enrichment program that maximizes the long-term academic potential of talented, self-motivated African American students by addressing the need for accelerated learning opportunities during early stages of education. FAME Academy prepares minority students from the Pittsburgh area to thrive at independent high school through summer and weekend learning opportunities.

The FAME Academy program begins following 6th grade and involves:

Three 6-week summer sessions (including an annual, one-week boarding component)
Weekly classes held Saturday mornings throughout the 7th and 8th grade school year
Upon successful completion of FAME Academy, students are helped to apply to FAME partner schools and, after accepted, to the FAME Scholar Program.

FAME Academy strengthens each student’s academic foundation and encourages growth though a challenging curriculum integrating teacher-led projects and learning labs. FAME Academy also establishes a strong support system for driven students that includes a network of hardworking peers, mentoring by FAME High School Scholars (currently attending independent schools), and Academy faculty and staff that provide students with the skills needed to succeed in competitive academic programs. Additional benefits include:

  • exposure to a wide range of academic courses
  • leadership development opportunities
  • test preparation and assistance with high school placement
  • access to independent school resources and personal laptops

Sixth grade students, with competitive grade point averages and high class standing who demonstrate intellectual curiosity and self-motivation are encouraged to apply. Candidates are considered based upon several criteria including school records, references, an interview, and performance on entrance exams.

The application process includes an application form, questionnaire, student essay, student records, proof of income and reference letters. Invited candidates may register to take the Independent School Entrance Exam at FAME and finalist will be asked to interview. Determinations will be made in late April.
